Performance and efficiency in Indian universities

Abstract While the evaluation of university efficiency has become commonplace in developed countries, exercises this kind have rarely been conducted context developing economies. We use frontier methods to analyse determinants costs higher education institutions India. Results obtained using standard stochastic model are compared with those from a latent class cost model. Average incremental costs, returns scale, and scope evaluated. Despite relatively small size average institution, we find that economies scale largely exhausted.
